Marleine van der Werf

Marleine van der Werf (1985) creates films and multi-sensory installations from a documentary point of view. To this end, she enters into interdisciplinary collaborations with among others scientists. Marleine obtained her bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Design at the St. Joost School of Art & Design and her master’s degree in Artistic Research in and through Cinema at the Master’s program of the Film Academy. Marleines work has been shown at among others IDFA, Future of storytelling NY and Art Basel. In 2018 she won the Next Talent Award and was chosen as European Talent for Science Media in 2019. In 2021, she received the Sundance Institute Interdisciplinary Program Grant.

In her autonomous work, Marleine strives for complete immersion. In the films and immersive installations she investigates how you can experience someone else’s world and what conditions are necessary to immerse ourselves in this ‘other’ perception. Her work always focuses on people who have a radically different perception of reality and who thereby question her own perception. These films and installations have a documentary starting point, true stories with the potential to make a big impact.

Research question
During the Vrijplaats, Marleine wants to investigate how you can use on/off boarding to invite the participant into the character’s perception of the world.
