Nina Landau

Nina Landau (b. 1986) holds a Master’s degree in Criminology (2008) and a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics (2010) from the Free University of Brussels (VUB). She started her career in the media and film industry in 2012 as a journalist at the Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting Association. She wrote political news articles but soon felt the lure of the audiovisual world and switched to television production.

Between 2013 and 2017, she worked for production companies Motionmakers and Sputnik Media and produced reportages for television and corporate films for companies and NGOs. In 2017, she decided to focus on documentary film production and started working as a documentary film producer at Associate Directors, an Antwerp-based production company specializing in auteur-driven documentaries for the Belgian and international markets.

She also directed two short documentaries, Lon in 2017 and My Family is a Circus in 2020. Both were screened at major documentary film festivals, including IDFA, DOKLeipzig, DOCNYC, Cinekid and Docville. Today, Nina works as a freelance documentary producer. She is developing her first feature-length documentary, The Floor is Yours, about chronic pelvic pain. She is also working on Moederschoot, a TV show about postnatal depression.

Research question

During the residency at the Vrijplaats, Nina would like to research the visual and creative approach of the fictional scenes for The Floor is Yours, and an efficient and creative directorial approach to find the right balance between the documentary and fiction elements. Additionally, she would like to engage in dialogue with creators and other professionals about the tension between being a creator and a character, and be given concrete tools to fully experience and to fulfill both roles.
