Workshop structure

Whether you call them showrunners or creators, this position is still a relatively new concept in the Netherlands. What exactly does a creator do and how do you manage a writer’s room, production team or an editor?

This workshop for writers and writer-directors allows you to further develop your skills to effectively safeguard the creative integrity of a series. During the workshop you will come into contact with experts from all over the world who will highlight both the similarities and differences between international and Dutch perspectives on various topics.

During 4 weeks you will learn about leading a writer’s cream; from production and post-production to delivery of the show. How do you organize agreement with the creative expectations of partners? What are the production parameters, ethical standards of fair practice, inclusiveness and diversity? And what does it mean to stay within budget and to deal with deadlines?

The workshop consists of different sessions, case studies and plenary master classes. The first three weeks (a 2 half days a week) are online. The selected participants are asked to watch different series before the start of the workshop and to send in a beat sheet of an episode. This will be used as material during a writer’s room session.

  • In the first week you will learn how to shape and pitch your ideas. With Chris Mack (Director Licensing Creative Talent Investment and Development of Netflix) and Lina Brouneus (Director Licensing of Netflix).
  • In the second week, you will learn how to set up, manage and maximize potency a writer’s room. With a. Neal Baer (ER, Law & Order SVU, Under The Dome, Designated Survivor) and Jake Coburn (Gossip Girl, Arrow, Quantico).
  • In the third week you will learn more about the budget, production and post-production process for a series. With M-K Kennedy (Director Physical Production at Netflix), Leo de Wolff (Manager Post Production at Netflix), Gillian Mackie (Manager VFX at Netflix) and Mike Robin (Producer / Director Nip-Tuck, Major Crimes).
  • In the fourth week, a live event will be organized at the Northern Film Festival in Leeuwarden, in collaboration with New Noardic Wave.
