Vera van Wolferen

Vera van Wolferen is a Dutch artist and filmmaker known for crafting imaginative, hand-built worlds that invite viewers to drift into daydreams. Blending animation with paper sculpture, her work is both playful and poetic, often touching on deeper emotional themes through stories for children. Her acclaimed short film Down in the Dumps tells a tender story about fitting in and hiding how you really feel. The film premiered at the Berlinale in 2025, earning an Honorable Mention, and went on to win Best International Short Animation at the Zlín Film Festival. Vera studied Fine Art at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Enschede and completed a Master’s in Animation at St. Joost School of Art & Design in Breda. She also directed Tourist Trap, a one-minute commentary on mass tourism, created as part of the Dutch Ultrakort program. She is currently developing ‘De Fluisterflat’ her first feature-length animated film for children, and through her participation in the Animatie Vrijplaats, she is researching how to grow as a director moving from short film to feature length.

Research question: How can I grow as a director to lead an animated feature, while preserving the creative intimacy and vision of my short film work?
