Şirin Bahar Demirel

Şirin Bahar Demirel (she/her) is a filmmaker and visual artist whose practice spans moving image, collage, and installation. Her work explores the intersection of personal and collective memory, often related to gender, politics, and patriarchal systems. In recent years, she has been particularly interested in textiles, especially needlework, as a medium for expressing resistance and care. Şirin studied cinema at Galatasaray University in Turkey and earned an MA in Artistic Direction of Cultural Projects from Paul Valéry University in France. Her work has been featured in festivals and exhibitions such as IDFA, Nederlands Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Sharjah Film Platform, Transmediale Berlin, and Ars Electronica. She lives and works in the Netherlands.

Research question: As I work on a textile-based interactive installation that explores the intricate connections between needlework, gender, and politics, my research question focuses on developing a visual animation style that communicates the concept and subject matter.
