Olivier S. Garcia took part in the Kids & Docs workshop after graduating in directing documentaries at the Film Academy in 2016. Here, he directed the youth documentary Skip & the rhythm rangers (2018, Witfilm/NTR), which was selected for the IDFA youth competition.
He then directed the short documentary Torso (2019, Tangerine Tree/EO) as part of Teledoc Campus, premiering at the NFF in Utrecht. His groundbreaking three-part documentary series Gewoon Boef (2020, Videoland, Newbe.) was the most-streamed documentary on Videoland. In partnership with Akwasi Ansah, he directed Een gat in mijn hart, the first documentary for Omroep Zwart (2022, Yalla docs), exploring the impact of the 1992 plane crash on the children in Amsterdam’s Bijlmer district. For FunX and the NTR Olivier produced videos addressing issues such as senseless violence, feminism, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Currently, Olivier is working on his debut feature-length documentary, delving into the dynamics of masculinity within his own family (KRO/NCRV, mint film office). And he is developing a feature-length documentary on Feis, the unsung hero of the Rotterdam underground hip-hop scene with FunX/NTR, and a feature-length theatrical documentary.
Research question
I would like to explore how to let go of a traditional narrative documentary film structure and experiment with multiple forms. For me, the most beautiful moments consist of documentary scenes that unfold in the ‘now’ moment, through preparation and the right choices.
