René Hazekamp

René Hazekamp (1962, Netherlands) comes from a poor, broken working-class family of mixed race, when few people noticed this. He studied at the HRITCS in Brussels, one of the worst film academies in the world at the time. Since 1986 he has made short independent/experimental dance films for his own film company Cendrillon, 1899. Commissioned by Lola da Musica (Dutch Public TV), Hazekamp has made more than a dozen music documentaries (including about the Mississippi Blues, the White Stripes, AC/DC , Monster Magnet, Dropkick Murphys, Solomon Burke, The Ex in Ethiopia). Lately he has focused on making feature-length documentaries about people closer to home. De Onplaatsbaren (2012), CircusTime (2014), Gangway to a Future (2018) have been selected for IDFA, IFFR and Locarno, among others.

René was the mentor of Benito Strangio for Vrijplaats residency: the tailormade edition: visual storytelling.
