FilmForward, Cinemind and Movies That Matter present a two-day programme focusing on the mental health of documentary filmmakers, with psychotherapist and former documentary producer Rebecca Day (Film in Mind). On Tuesday we start with a Masterclass Mental Health in Documentary Filmmaking: the impact of telling stories. A day later, on Wednesday 25 March, we’re organizing this Deep Dive Navigating Trauma in Documentary Work.

Documentary filmmakers, producers, and other film professionals often work closely with distressing stories and vulnerable communities, and may themselves be part of these communities. What impact does this have on our brains and bodies? How do we recognise signs of vicarious or secondary trauma? And how can we build sustainable, ethical working practices, for ourselves, our crews, and for the people who trust us with their stories?

This Deep Dive takes place a day later, and will be an interactive, small-group workshop (maximum of 15 participants) that offers space for reflection, exchange, and practical application. Designed specifically for filmmakers and film professionals working with sensitive subject matter, the session provides concrete tools to support both ethical practice and personal wellbeing. Participants will gain practical tools for:

  • Trauma-informed and ethical practice
  • Boundary-setting and sustainable working methods
  • Self-care strategies to reduce burnout
  • Understanding power dynamics, collaboration, and responsibility in the filmmaking process

Through guided discussion and practical exercises, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how trauma can manifest within documentary processes, and how to build resilient, ethically grounded working methods that support both impactful storytelling and long-term wellbeing.

Who is this Deep Dive for?
This session is open to filmmakers, producers, journalists, activists, and other professionals working with urgent and sensitive subject matter.
