Workshop Animating AI characters - Generating characters through fluid prompting
Workshop on using AI in animation, where you can experiment with character design and the AI method ‘Stable Diffusion’.
In this hands-on workshop, Fabian Mosele will show you how to use the AI method ‘Stable Diffusion’ to break some of our predetermined notions for character design and prompting. Generative models are built on biased categorizations and concepts of language and image. In this workshop, these categorizations and concepts are broken down to create new, weird characters.
After the workshop you can join the interactive presentation ‘AI in film making and storytelling’ (from 3 – 5 pm) where AIxDESIGN and Sublab will present the teasers that the participants of the artist residency STORY&CODE using AI. During the presentations, they discuss their experiences with the use of AI in making the animation teasers. This will be followed by a panel discussion with experts about the possibilities and impossibilities of AI techniques and the impact on the sector.
Opzet Workshop
The workshop starts with cutting out images from newspapers and magazines, which form the basis for new characters. After taking a picture of it and uploading it to your computer, you’re going to use the Stable Diffusion method to play with prompts to bring new non-conforming characters to life.
The approach here is to approach prompting in a more experimental way, using the ‘tokenization’ of language, rather than sticking to the standard. At the end, the characters are named and all merged together, creating a small community of new characters living together.
- Bring your own computer; during the workshop you will use the Stable Diffusion method on a free Website and will need a GitHub account.
Voor wie?
Animators, artists, filmmakers, creatives interested in exploring the opportunities and implications of AI in their own practice.
Partners
The workshop is set up in collaboration with Sublab and AIxDESIGN.
Sublab is the R&D lab of Submarine Channel – a production studio for film, immersive, and interactive projects (submarinechannel.com en sublab.nl).
AIxDESIGN (AIxD) is a lab shaping new narratives & approaches to participatory and slow AI and a global community of designers, researchers, creative technologists, and activists using AI in pursuit of creativity, justice and joy (aixdesign.co).
Coaches
The workshop is led by Fabian Mosele. Fabian (he/them) explores the intersection between generative machine learning and storytelling through animation, parody and the remix of internet phenomena. Fabian’s projects include ‘Reflection of a Reflection of a Reflection’ (ROAROAR) featured in Cartoonbrew, ‘Copyright Proof Cakes’, ‘Smart You’ and ‘Digital Folktales’. Their work critically approaches the digital age through a humorous lens, using pop culture and meme references to reflect on how digital media is changing our self-direction and identity. Originally from South Tyrol, Italy, Fabian is now completing the MA in Digital Media in Bremen (Germany) with a thesis on identity within generative models and generative animation.
